How the Formula Works

Tip Amount: Bill × (Tip% ÷ 100)

Frequently Asked Questions

How much should I tip at a restaurant?

Standard restaurant tip is 15–20% for good service, 20–25% for excellent service. For takeout, 10–15% is common. For delivery, $3–5 minimum or 15–20%.

How do I calculate a 20% tip?

Move the decimal one place left (10%), then double it. On a $45 bill: $4.50 × 2 = $9 tip. Or simply multiply by 0.20.

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Etiquette varies — tipping on pre-tax is technically correct, but most people tip on the total. Either is acceptable.

How do I split a bill evenly?

Add the tip to the total bill, then divide by the number of people. This calculator does it automatically.

Is tipping mandatory?

In the US, tipping is customary but not legally required. In many other countries, service charges are included in the bill.
